I’m not too familiar with the work of Joe Morello, but given this 1961 drum solo, I think he’s someone I’ll definitely look into. Simply amazing stuff, especially when he switches to sticks in a traditional grip and does that incredible snare maneuver. Unbelievable.

I’d like to see him march and do that. :)
I saw Joe Morello live in a 1961 MSG concert and it was the most unbelievable change of music appreciation that my life ever encountered. I was a kid then, but that night changed this drummers life forever. He and Buddy Rich were on the dame bill. So was Gene Krupa, Rufus “Speedy” Jones, Sonny Payne, Ed Thigpen, and Vernel Fournier. That was an All Star event for bands with outstanding drummers. I never again witnessed a line-up like that anywhere over two evenings and at a very reasonable price. The best!
That sounds like an incredible line-up! It’s like a veritable who’s-who of jazz greats.
