Postgres vs. MySQL

As expected, when I posted my review of The Definitive Guide to MySQL hordes of folks came out to bash it with their favorite database (PostgreSQL). It’s amazing how much advocacy can really ruin a products reputation. PostgreSQL is a great database in it’s own right, but it really didn’t have a place in a book review. “Does anyone today look at the available technologies, and actually choose MySQL over PostgreSQL?” Of course people still choose MySQL. Not every database needs to be as full featured as PostgreSQL. Every database has it’s place, just as every operating system has it’s place. (Yes, I know some may think this is strange coming from someone who basically slams Windows every chance he gets. To be fair, I’ve tried to not be as antagonistic in my advocacy against Windows, though sometimes I will recommend Linux just to get a rise out of people. )
