With the heat wave we’ve had over the past few days, we’re now starting to see some cooler temperatures roll around. With the sudden drop, though, comes some pretty wid thunderstorms. We’ve had a bank of clouds off in the distance (we’re talking Lansing, here) that has produced an incredible lightning storm that’s plainly visible from our apartment. Pretty bizzare. Unfortunately, the camera isn’t powerful enough to capture them, so I’ve got some pretty lousy night-time photos to show for my effort. Ahh well.
Lightning is really hot (I was going to say cool, but that would be inaccurate). It’s cool to watch it. It’s very impressive up close. The closest ground strike i’ve experienced was at a little under 200 yards. Lightning is also quite rare. The Earth is only struck by lightning about ten times a second. Ten times a second, somewhere on Earth, lightning strikes the ground. Every second. 24×7. 365 days a year. It never gets tired. Shocking.
It’s also fairly common for lightning to strike the same place more than once.
