Gee, looks like this story isn't as clear-cut as the media made it out to be, and the Internet isn't to blame. Now, the girl is on a tether for home truancy, and is scheduled for a hearing. They've also banned her from using the Internet.
The guy was released, but authorities are going to search his computer. It's rather unfortunate that he has to subject his machine to the prying eyes of the local law enforcement, but the cops have to make sure he's not a pervert or a criminal or anything. I'm sure being exposed to the authorities like that isn't what he had in mind when he hooked up with this slut.
WRIF's morning jocks Drew and Mike were bummed that this guy got off without being charged, but honestly, what did he do that was illegal? Desperate, maybe, and most certainly stupid, but illegal? I don't think so.
What really irks me in this story is how quickly the media tried to fit it to the current Internet predator mold. What's even scarier is this quote from the article:
"As far as we can determine, no crime actually took place," Tobin [Therese Tobin, chief trial attorney for the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office] said.
If the man had sex with the girl, he would have been charged with statutory rape, regardless if he thought she was 18 years old. But that wasn't the case, Tobin said.
Yep, that's right. Had they consummated their online relationship, there would have been hell to pay. In Michigan, there is a special State Sex Offenders list that this guy would have been a part of - for life.
All because some 13 year old is a lying slut.
