In general I agree. However, there are still standouts as far as “modern” Christmas albums go. These include (but are not limited to):

Enya’s original Christmas EP
Twisted Sister’s Twisted Christmas
Vince Guaraldi’s soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas
And of course any Christmas-related track by Weird Al Yankovic!

Vince Guaraldi’s soundtrack is far-and-away the lead Christmas album for me. Everything else just sounds rehashed.
