Designing a Well Lived Life: Checking In (October 2020)

Checking in for October for my "Designing a Well-Lived Life" blogging. This is about making small changes during the year to make larger changes.

  • Dropping expectations: This month I found myself wanting a lot more. I found myself wishing that I had received more comments about the scenario that I wrote about the Mother of All Demos, but so far it's been rather quiet. I've also been finding myself struggling with wanting to do recreational programming or really anything of consequence. I think this is related to feeling like I need to keep coming back with more better, more awesomer, more whatever. It has helped me to make some progress in certain areas, but it's definitely been brought about by expectations. Thought I had defeated them but nope, not yet.

  • Physical Health: Done some more drumming on my practice pad and walking, but hardly the thing that's going to be actual physical exercise. I fear that my health will really need to deteriorate before I take this seriously and that's not a good strategy.

  • Writing more: I have been working more on finishing up the RPG for Pepper&Carrot, so counting this as a win for this month. Not much in the way of blogging, save for a few articles.

  • Programming more: Eh, some progress, but I'm finding that I'm losing steam in wanting to learn more about the Atari ST. Maybe I need a break from it in order to explore other avenues. Perhaps I can take this coming week and look at other programming?

  • Mindfulness: Been steady with this. I can at least move out part of the distractions and stay focused for periods of time, but I do get distracted. Noticed that happens when things get challenging. Something to work on.

  • Decluttering: Got rid of some books and games this past month so calling this a bit of a win.

  • Deeper work: Feel like I'm coasting on this. More work to be done.

  • Getting out of debt: Erm, not great here. Certain companies and musicians keep releasing interesting things and I keep buying them. I need to relax on these things and work more on banishing the debt instead.

Overall not a bad month but could be better. Looking forward to what November brings.
