Checking in for 2023-11-16:
- I started taking the Lonsurf today and got my Epoetin alfa (nee: Procrit) shot. Next week is Thanksgiving so the office will be closed on Thursday. Outside of the Zarxio and Losurf I have a bit of a break from appointments. This pleases me.
- I worked a bit on the formatting of the Record Shop game, which was basically the same formatting that I use for The Mediocre Programmer book. Unfortunately one thing is true with modern Open Source software: If it's a development platform eventually there will be a breaking change for developers. Also: every user of Open Source Software is a developer by default. I'm using Pandoc and LaTeX and both of them have breaking changes with the workflow that I previously had. I made some progress but I still have a few issues that I need to address. Last night I was pretty frustrated by the whole thing and was ready to swear off all of these tools but with patience and a little searching I think I'll be able to figure this out again. I'm just a tad salty that what worked perfectly well before is now erroring out. That said, I've also learned that if something errors out it was likely incorrectly implemented before. Still frustrating.
- I also spent entirely too much time trying to figure out why I couldn't get a template to load with Pandoc. The error was misleading in that it showed that it was trying to load from the system path. I thought I had copied over things properly from The Mediocre Programmer project so I spent about an hour trying to figure out why it was using that path and not the local path that it said it should default to. Turns out the reason was a typo (dash instead of period in the filename) which caused Pandoc to ignore the local path and try the system path (and fail). I chalk that one up to programmer assumptions and bad error handling.
That's all for now. More as I know it.
